Resources and Updates for School of Engineering

While this change log was initially started to be a resource during the initial COVID-19 pandemic, feedback from students identified this page as a useful resource. As such, we will try to keep it updated as the website is restructured. Rather than make you search through the entire website for updated resource information and directions, we will continue to provide links to the latest updates.

Latest Update (9/5/2024): Update Includes the following:

  • Full website review with numerous small changes. Key ones are as follows:
    • The removal of all references to the VMware academic program which has been discontinued by Broadcom.
    • Changes to reflect the ABET accreditation of both the Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering programs.
    • Updated various pages to reflect the transition to Windows 11 in our labs.
    • Rewrite of a number of FAQs to either provide new/modified information or to (hopefully) make the answer easier to understand.

  • Updated FAQ #8 and #9. The updates cover changes to JetBrains licensing with links to the appropriate software versions for students wanting to install the IDEs on their personal machine. It also addresses the new MFA requirement, including a new informational page containing detailed MFA setup instructions.

Update (1/23/2023): Update Includes the following:

  • Complete redesign and reordering of the FAQ page is now complete. Questions related to Gmail and AD account issues have been broken down into multiple questions to provide more detail and a number of other questions have updated information. In addition, two new questions, #8 and #9, were added to address Linux login issues and licensing server issues.

Update (1/16/2023): Update Includes the following:

  • Deployed the MFA Bypass utility for actively enrolled students. This process can be initiated by visiting the following page: https://web.engr.ship.edu/for-students/password-reset-request/mfa-bypass-request/ This tool is designed to allow students to bypass MFA in the event of a lost or damaged device. However, this tool will also benefit the students who failed to configure their MFA setting by the previous deadline. Updates to the appropriate FAQ sections are soon to follow. Please note, this utility will only work if both email addresses have the same user ID.

Update (10/17/2022): Update Includes the following:

  • Updating the documentation for some significant procedural changes, including after hour access and requesting technical assistance. Updated the infrastructure pages to reflect the required modifications needed to migrate to vCenter 7 which occurred during the summer. Will be restructuring the FAQ page, documenting the new VPN process, relocating all file downloads to Google drive for better performance when off campus, and updating the various request forms.

Update (2/7/2022): Update Includes the following:

  • Started a series of much needed updates. These updates will include the changes in faculty, updated lab configurations, the modifications of various policies, and changes to some of the key FAQ answers. This update will also set the groundwork for some significant system changes which are scheduled for the Summer of 2022, including the migration to a new VPN solution and changes to academic program memberships.

Update (9/10/2021): Update Includes the following:

  • Started the reorganization of the website. Removing and/or updating content to reflect the current processes and resources. The COVID-19 specific section has been removed and the additional content has been relocated under the For-Students section of the site.

  • Modified requesting lab access module:
    • to support the requesting of access to the specialty equipment in the fabrication lab
    • send a confirmation message to the student upon completion of the request questionnaire
  • Modified FAQ Page, removing the references to the outdated method for distributing student account credentials. As of now, all new accounts require the student to use the provided reset tools to set their account passwords.

  • Added clarifications to the Frequently Asked Questions page. Specifically:
    • FAQ #8: added information about IP bans when attempting to use Sloop/Clipper
    • FAQ #12: edited to reflect the current procedure for weekend or non-class related lab access

Update (Summer – 8/24 2020): Update Includes the following:

  • Deployed the new password reset system, allowing a secure method for changing SoE domain passwords from off-campus
  • Deployed interactive Resource Request Questionnaire (phase one of the new interactive support process)
  • Created the Facility Modification page providing an overview of the classroom / lab configurations for the Fall Semester and referenced the page on the Facilities Page
  • Created Procedures for Lab Use page which provides students with the procedures they need to follow when using School of Engineering computer & research labs
  • Reconfigured Youtrack and Gitlab to use SSL so they can be left outside the firewall, please remember the server is now public when setting project permissions.
  • To assist students with Matlab installs, we added links to the Essential Software Page to the University’s Mathworks portal and to the University’s installation guide
  • Updated the Essential Software Page, removing references to the slower method for downloading and installing Solidworks on a personal device.
  • Created the download page for AutoCAD Civil 3D 2020. Started documenting the installation steps.
  • Updated Program Checksheets

  • Modified FAQ #2 and added instructions to the Communication page with the temporary process for resetting AD credentials.

Update (4/3/2020): Update Includes the following:

  • Due to the number of students reporting network issues while downloading the large Solidworks file, an alternate approach was identified and new directions were posted on the Alternate Solidworks Installation page. PLEASE NOTE: This requires you to be logged into your School of Engineering GMail account.
  • Added a link to the Essential Software page for the alternate download and installation method for Solidworks.
  • Updated tutoring hours for some tutors.

  • Added a link to the new detailed clarification page on the VPN & RDP Support page further clarifying the information in the IMPORTANT NOTE section at the top of the page.
  • Added link to the detailed clarification page to both the OrCAD and Solidworks installation guides as the both the first alternative step if they are unable to install the software and an optional final step in the event that the software runs poorly on their machine.
